This puzzle consists in a Love's Dozen 6-piece burr where the pieces have been extended until it takes the shape of a cube instead of a cross.
The idea came from Jean Carle, who started from Bruce Love's 6-piece burr, which is the highest level 6-piece cross, with 12 moves to remove the first piece. He added voxels around the pieces until the final shape becomes cubic, and modified the original design a bit so that the puzzle can still work.
Then, Stephane Chomine studied the problem and came with this design, which features the exact original pieces and has the same 12-moves solution as the original. The only difference is that the dead end has disappeared.
Because of the complex shape of the pieces, they are made of glued parts.
Two distinct woods have been used so that the original cross stands out.
